A Fort Worth dentist has been arrested and charged with injury to a child after a 4-year-old patient died following a sedated dental procedure earlier this year, authorities said.

Dr. Chishelle Hemphill was arrested after an investigation into the death of the child, who underwent a dental procedure at Hemphill's clinic on Sycamore School Road this spring.

According to authorities, the girl did not regain consciousness after the procedure. She was transported by paramedics to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office determined the child's cause of death was toxic levels of meperidine, a prescription opioid pain medication and sedative commonly known by the brand name Demerol.

Hemphill has been charged with injury to a child. Court records did not immediately indicate whether she had retained an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the sedation or the ongoing investigation. The case remains under investigation.
