As students prepare to go back to school, one major North Texas school district has a lot of work to do to improve student performance.
Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Dr. Karen Molinar says they will implement a plan that will revamp both literacy and math from Kindergarten through the 12th grade.
"We definitely have what I have called out as a literacy crisis," Dr. Molinar told the Mid-Morning Mike Check on KRLD. "It's how we are looking at implementing our instructional materials but more importantly our instructional framework."
The state has looked into the possibility of taking over the district based on lagging student performance.
Several schools in the Fort Worth ISD have added days to the calendar this year.
Dr. Molinar says they have also doubled the amount of instruction some students will receive on two critical items.
"Our students will receive 90 minutes, every day, of literacy and math," she said. "They are below grade level, we have our students who are behind, so we want to accelerate them."
