FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD)- Wednesday, Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant Area Food Bank announced plans to add markets at 12 additional campuses. The two already had pantries in eight schools.
"What a wonderful way to kick off the holidays," says the food bank's Julie Butner.
Butner says Tarrant Area Food Bank serves about 500,000 people across its 13 county territory. One in four of those people is a child.
"Our public schools are a trusted resource," she says. "It makes sense to provide our families with easier access to food."
"We will see our academic achievement, our academic growth rise as we continue to build in and push in together as partners," says Fort Worth ISD Interim Superintendent Karen Molinar.
Molinar says the district is working with businesses and the private sector to give kids the tools they need to succeed.
"Thankfully, our partners have stepped up," she says. "It's the worst thing for a student to come to school, and we're asking them to sit in a seat, learn to read, read to learn without their stomach being full or knowing what lunch looks like or what dinner looks like."
