Fort Worth's latest crime reduction initiative has been in effect for about two months now and Police Chief Neil Noakes says it was needed because his city saw a 25-year high in homicides last year.
In response Fort Worth PD implemented its new program called "Fort Worth Safe" in May. It has a lot of moving parts, but it includes the use of closed circuit cameras feeding video into a real time crime center from which officers can be sent directly to where they're needed most.
Noakes believes technology will never replace the officer in the street but when you combine those two things, the results are, as he puts it "remarkable."
"Fort Worth Safe" also employs technology intended to let officers pinpoint crime hot spots and move in with an optimal number of officers, rather than flood a neighborhood with police which has in the past aggravated those who feel their streets are being profiled.
