Police said 25-year-old Jose Vega led the motorcycle officer on a chase, throwing some contraband out the vehicle's window before driving into a cul-de-sac.

The department said the officer instructed Vega to stop, but he made a U-turn and accelerated, ramming into the officer's motorcycle.

The officer jumped off the bike before the crash. In the process, the officer fired a round through the vehicle's windshield, hitting Vega.

Grand Prairie police said paramedics took Vega to a nearby hospital.

The department placed the motorcycle officer - who was uninjured - on routine administrative leave while it investigates the shooting.
