Emotions ran high at last night's Fort Worth school board meeting where trustees finally decided on an abstinence-based sex education curriculum for middle and high school students.
After two hours of back-and-forth, the board approved a new curriculum that's based on abstinence. Some parents and students protested saying they want real sex education taught, and want it to include things like birth control, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
But supporters of the abstinence-based curriculum say that's the better plan for students, for moral reasons.
The trustees' final decision endorsed the recommendation of the district's Student Health Advisory Council, choosing the abstinence-only curriculum to begin in sixth grade.
