It's a first in the history of the world, and it's happening in Fort Worth.
"We are going to become the first city in the United States - first thing in the world - to mine Bitcoin here on-site at City Hall," proclaimed Mayor Mattie Parker at Tuesday morning's City Council meeting.
The Council voted unanimously to approve the pilot program, in which three Bitcoin mining machines will be placed inside the City Hall's climate-controlled data center.
Parker says it will further advance Fort Worth's goal of becoming a leading center of technology and innovation.
"We are a city that's open for technology innovation," Parker said, "and cryptocurrency is a part of that future."
Texas Blockchain Council donated the mining machines, and they will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
They will be housed on a private network to minimize security risks.
Parker notes that cryptocurrency is becoming more and more mainstream.
"It's not lost on me that just this morning, Fidelity announced that cryptocurrency will be a part of their own 401(k) strategy," Parker said. "This is a part of the future, and many of us have to jump on board."
