A Fort Worth woman who struck and killed a bicyclist then left the scene in Grand Prairie nearly four years ago has been convicted of failure to stop and render aid in a fatal accident.
Kallie Wright, 42, was sentenced to 12-years in prison. The accident happened July 15, 2018 as victim Calvin Middleton, 43 Cedar Hill, rode his bicycle on Belt Line Road at the I-20 frontage road intersection. Middleton was wearing the appropriate gear and was in the correct lane, according to police. Wright struck Middleton from behind.
Witnesses say Wright briefly returned to the scene, then left a second time. Police used surveillance video from nearby businesses to home-in on Wright’s car. An arrest warrant was issued, but Wright surrendered before the warrant was served, police said.
For the family of Middleton, it has been a long four year wait for justice.
“You just never know what the court’s thinking these days and the jury is thinking these days,” said Shon Middleton, brother of the victim. “We got the guilty verdict and my family was definitely excited about that.”
Although the family would have liked to have seen a sentence closer to the 20-year maximum, they were pleased with the 12-year sentence, said Middleton, who adds there is a degree of closure now that the case is over
“My brother was my hero, actually. We were a year and seven months apart. We pretty much did everything together like twins,” Middleton said. “He was a cyclist, he was a baseball player, he was a catcher in college, he was a photographer, he was an artist. He wore a lot of hats.”
