Employees at the Fort Worth Zoo are taking extra precautions this week to ensure the safety of their animals amid freezing temperatures.

Avery Elander, a spokesperson for the zoo, said animals native to North Texas are naturally equipped to handle cold weather. However, many of the zoo’s residents are originally from tropical climates and require additional care during winter storms.

Elander noted that one of the zoo’s younger residents, a 1-year-old lion cub, briefly ventured out of his warm barn to explore the snow but quickly retreated indoors.

The zoo said it will continue to monitor conditions closely, ensuring that all animals remain comfortable and safe during the cold weather.
