A long-running program that offered free parking in downtown Fort Worth is ending, city officials confirmed.

The free weekend and evening parking program, launched in 1999, will no longer be available starting Jan. 1. Two downtown garages near Bass Performance Hall — at 401 Calhoun Street and 601 Commerce Street — will no longer offer complimentary parking.

Downtown Fort Worth Inc., which manages the downtown area, said it is developing a parking validation program to reduce costs for visitors to performing arts venues.

The free parking program was funded through the Downtown Tax Increment Financing District, a special fund used for downtown improvements.

At its height, five downtown garages offered free parking on evenings and weekends. Metered street parking will remain free during those times, and Sundance Square continues to provide validation for patrons of its tenants.
