A crew of Frisco firefighters is heading to west Texas to be part of several Texas A&M Forest Service strike teams poised to attack when wildfires start.

About 80 percent of Texas is under Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings today.

"They're pre-positioned because of the extreme heat and dry conditions. The fire weather forecasters at the Texas Forest Service have a high prediction level on that area for wildfires," said Frisco Deputy Fire Chief Kyle Mills.

"They're traditionally on a seven-day deployment. They can be extended up to 14 days. It doesn't appear that conditions are going to get any better in the near future."

Frisco provides firefighters when necessary under the state's mutual-aid system, and can also benefit from that system whenever additional manpower is needed. The staffers sent to Stephenville have special training so they are prepared for battling wildfires.
