State Rep. Jared Patterson of Frisco plans to file a resolution in the next legislative session calling on the North Texas Tollway Authority to rename the Dallas North Tollway the “Donald J. Trump Tollway.”

Patterson announced the move Thursday on social media, stepping in after U.S. Sen. John Cornyn backed away from his earlier proposal to designate U.S. Highway 287 as Interstate 47, or the Trump Interstate. Cornyn introduced the federal bill in May during his Senate primary campaign but indicated it would not be a priority after losing the Republican runoff.

The Dallas North Tollway is a heavily traveled 30.2-mile toll road running through North Texas from Dallas through Collin and Denton counties. It serves as a major artery for commuters and connects key economic hubs in one of the fastest-growing regions in the country.

Patterson, a Republican who represents House District 106 including Frisco and parts of eastern Denton County, said the corridor reflects the success of Trump’s pro-growth policies. The North Texas Tollway Authority, which owns and operates the roadway, would have final say under its naming policies.

The proposal comes amid ongoing efforts to honor the president in Texas infrastructure. Cornyn’s bill aimed to upgrade and rename a much longer highway route from Port Arthur, Texas, to Montana, but that effort has now stalled as Cornyn serves out his remaining term as a lame duck senator.

No timeline for Patterson’s resolution has been set beyond the next legislative session. The idea has already sparked discussion among local leaders and drivers who use the tollway daily.
