From more than 87,000 students in 2016 to just 72,000 students in 2023, Fort Worth Independent School District has seen a drop off of around 15,000 students in less than a decade.
This is happening while the city itself is growing. The Fort Worth population continues to grow by 1.4% annually bringing the current population to 961,885.
So why is this happening? Well Fort Worth ISD is pointing to fewer housing options for young families in the area and the opening of charter schools.
The low attendance is creating issues for the district leaving them with more buildings, resources and teachers than the student population might need.
The district is looking at passing a solution to have a study done. The study would help them better understand how they can use their excess resources, teachers, and buildings.
They will vote on the study Tuesday night at the school board meeting.
