A gas leak and water main break in Downtown Dallas led to the evacuation of a 12-story high-rise and forced emergency crews to shut down several streets Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred in the 300 block of S. St. Paul Street, where construction crews accidentally struck and damaged a natural gas pipeline. Shortly after, a water main burst, compounding the crisis and flooding nearby intersections.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the scene around 2:05 p.m., evacuating an unknown number of residents from the Lone Star Gas Lofts to a nearby hotel. Officials closed surrounding streets to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic as Atmos Energy worked to contain the gas leak.
Atmos Energy confirmed that the pipeline damage was caused by ongoing construction work, but did not specify which company was responsible.
The water main break caused significant flooding, disrupting businesses and forcing some office buildings to close early. Several restaurants and retail stores reported low water pressure, while others had to shut down entirely due to the lack of running water.
City officials urged residents to avoid the area and seek alternate routes home.
Atmos Energy crews worked late into the night to repair the gas line, while city workers attempted to contain the water main break and restore service to affected buildings.
Officials have not yet provided an estimate on when repairs will be completed, but they assured residents that updates will be provided throughout the day.
