In response to the elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is directing the commissioner of the Texas Education Association (TEA) to create a new position within the agency.
Governor Abbott sent a letter to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, directing him to create the position of Chief of School Safety and Security.
Reports say that person would be tasked with implementing school safety policies enacted by the Texas legislature and to ensure that schools are using best practices to safeguard against shootings and other dangers.
The person appointed for this role would report directly to the TEA commissioner and would have a direct line to the governor's office.
