The owner of a Texas canoe and kayaking company filed a lawsuit Friday seeking to stop the installation of buoys in the middle of the Rio Grande to hinder illegal border crossers.
The lawsuit was filed by Jessie Fuentes, the owner of Epi’s Canoe & Kayak Team based in Maverick County. His suit lists the state of Texas, Governor Abbott, plus the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard.
In June, Governor Abbott announced his plan to float the first 1,000 feet of the barrier in the river near Eagle Pass and Friday the first buoys were deployed.
Texas DPS Director Colonel Steven McCraw says the floating barrier will be a deterrent to keep migrants from entering the Rio Grande.
Over the Independence Day weekend, an infant was one of four people who died while illegally crossing the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass.
