Texas Governor Greg Abbott will not be attending the NRA convention in Houston today, choosing instead to record a video to be shown to the gathering.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has been asking politicians to withdraw from the dais because of this week's mass murder in Uvalde.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Houston-area Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) say they will not be attending either.

Early Friday, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick announced he would not be attending the convention, saying in a tweet: "After prayerful consideration and discussion with NRA officials, I have decided not to speak at the NRA breakfast." He also added that he is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Patrick said that following the deadly school shooting in Uvalde, "this is a time to focus on the families, first of foremost."

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has said he intends to appear at the convention as will former President Donald Trump.

Some of the entertainers listed to performat the convention including singers Lee Greenwood and Don MacLean are also withdrawing from the program.
