The Mayor of Houston says he is aware of demands on social media to cancel the NRA convention after the school shooting in Uvalde. It's scheduled for May 27th through 29th in Houston. However, Mayor Sylvester Turner says the convention will go on as scheduled.

"That convention has been on the books for two years," Mayor Turner said. "It is a contractual arrangement. We simply can not cancel a conference or convention because we disagree with the subject matter. That would subject the city to a number of lawsuits."

The event is taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center, which is owned by the City of Houston and managed by the Houston First Corporation.

"I think a greater question is...why are elected officials coming to the NRA to speak? What message does that send?" Mayor Turner said. "I do not think that the Governor or U.S. Senator Ted Cruz or any other Congressperson going and speaking sends the right message."

He's urging any elected officials who had been scheduled to speak at the convention to stay away instead.
