With Menorah lightings across North Texas Sunday night, Jews have inaugurated this year's Hanukkah celebrations.
Hanukkah -- often called the Festival of Lights -- commemorates the 2nd century BC recovery of Jerusalem and re-dedication of the Jewish temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Greek descendants of Alexander the Great.
This year's period of Hanukkah began at sundown Sunday with Menorah lightings in a number of communities including Frisco, Southlake, Rockwall and Dallas where the Galleria lit the first candle on its giant two story Menorah.
Celebrations continue tonight in Plano at The Shops at Willow Bend where a fire truck will drop thousands of chocolate gelt coins from its raised ladder.
Later in the week, additional celebrations will be hosted in McKinney, Dallas and Allen.
