Health officials all across the country are keeping a close eye on the Omicron variant and that includes Tarrant County.

Even as the Omicron variant starts to take hold, Tarrant County's COVID-19 activity has not experienced any significant uptick as of yet.

Public Health Director Vinny Taneja says if the numbers hold, the county should be able to lower its community spread level back down to "substantial," although, with holiday gatherings right around the corner any such downgrade would be temporary.

Taneja says if you're hosting a holiday gathering this year, don't be afraid to ask guests about their vaccination status.

He also says the best way to protect yourself against Omicron or any future variant is to get your booster shot.
