Houston’s Galleria will begin charging shoppers to park in its garages starting November 2, ending years of free self-parking at one of the city’s largest shopping centers.

Simon Property Group, which operates the mall, said the change introduces a modern parking system designed to provide convenient parking for guests. Rates will be $2 for up to four hours, $5 for four to seven hours, and $25 for up to 24 hours. Employees will continue to park free in designated areas, and select retailers may offer parking validation at their discretion.

Until the new system begins, The Galleria has offered free self-parking in its Yellow, Brown, Green, Orange and Red garages. Express parking in certain surface lots and on Level 3 of the Yellow Garage already carried a fee, and valet parking remains available. The November 2 change extends paid parking to the garages that have long been free for most shoppers.

A Simon spokesperson described the move as an effort to make parking more convenient for people visiting to shop, dine, and enjoy the center. The company has not detailed how drivers will pay the new fees or whether there will be a grace period for those who enter and leave without parking.

The timing arrives just ahead of the holiday shopping season. The Galleria is a major destination in the Uptown area, drawing shoppers for its mix of stores, restaurants, and the indoor ice-skating rink. For short visits, the $2 charge will be the minimum cost to use the garages. Longer stays will cost more depending on the length of the visit.
