The Humane Society of North Texas has paused dog adoptions because of a distemper outbreak at its shelter.
The very contagious viral illness can be deadly as it affects dogs' central nervous system along with their gastro-intestinal and respiratory systems.
The organization says dogs recently housed in its shelter recently tested positive for distemper. The hundreds of dogs in the shelter will be closely monitored and will test all dogs showing signs of respiratory distress.
The pause on adoptions is expected to last for two weeks.
Officials say humans, cats and other small animals are not susceptible to distemper.
