Amid daily responsibilities, filing taxes can be a significant source of stress for many Texans. However, relief has arrived in the form of IRS Direct File, a new initiative by the IRS available in 12 states, including Texas.
This pilot program aims to simplify the tax filing process and reduce costs for users.
Adam Ruben, vice president at the Economic Security Project, notes that IRS Direct File is tailored for individuals with straightforward tax situations, typically those whose earnings are reported on a W-2 form.
"This year, it's not going to cover contractors or gig workers," Ruben points out. "But we expect it's going to be expanded in the future."
Ruben anticipates substantial financial benefits, estimating annual savings of $1.7 billion for Texans, including $721 million from filing fees. The program has received widespread support from voters, reflecting a growing frustration with paying for tax preparation services.
"Most people would rather pay their bills than have to pay TurboTax," Ruben said. "So having a free, simplified, and secure website like this has been a big boost. It's very popular. Eighty-eight percent of voters across party lines support the IRS creating a free and simplified public option for tax filing like this."
For those interested in utilizing IRS Direct File, eligibility and filing options can be found on the directfile.irs.gov website. One notable feature is the availability of real-time support from IRS employees, providing quick answers to questions.
