The Irving City Council has approved a zoning change that paves the way for a resort hotel complex to be built on the former Texas Stadium site. The decision comes after significant backlash from residents during a meeting on Monday.

The project, spearheaded by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation — the owner of the Dallas Mavericks — originally included plans for a casino. However, the casino proposal was withdrawn at the last minute in response to community opposition.

Residents expressed concerns about the potential impact of a casino in the area, leading the Sands group to revise its vision for the site. The company now plans to move forward with the resort hotel and a new arena, but no casino.

Despite the zoning change, the project remains in its early stages, with construction not expected to begin for at least five to seven years.
