Former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison after he was found guilty of manslaughter last week in the 2019 shooting death of Atatiana Jefferson.
The defense and prosecution made closing arguments in the sentencing portion of the trial on Monday morning. The jury deliberated the rest of the day Monday into early Tuesday afternoon.
Dean, a former Fort Worth police officer, fatally shot Jefferson in October 2019 and was sentenced to 11 years, 10 months, and 12 days in prison. He will receive credit for time served leading up to the trial.
In making a case for the longest sentence possible, the prosecution called the doctor who performed Dean's pre-employment psychiatric examination.
"My conclusion was that he was not psychologically suitable to serve as a police officer," Dr. Kyle Clayton said Friday.
Meanwhile, the defense is making a case for Dean to receive probation.
"Dependable, upright, noble. Those would be a few adjectives that I would use to describe him," Tim Foster, who went to church with Dean, said.
Dean's sister, an Arlington police officer, also testified on his behalf.
