A Flower Mound bakery sparked widespread online debate this week after selling cookies decorated with an upside-down American flag and the phrase “under distress” as a form of protest against the country’s current political climate.
Hive Bakery owner Haley Popp posted on social media ahead of the July 4 holiday expressing reluctance to celebrate, citing feelings of embarrassment, fear and disappointment in the nation’s direction. The bakery remained open on Independence Day, selling the themed sugar cookies that quickly sold out and required additional batches. Flower Mound is a northern suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
The posts and images spread rapidly across platforms, drawing both strong criticism and support. Some customers and online commentators called for boycotts, while others lined up at the shop in Parker Square, leading to continued sellouts and busy operations. Popp has a history of incorporating political and social messages into her baked goods, including previous items tied to causes such as LGBTQ+ pride and reproductive rights. The bakery is known for its award-winning custom cakes and has appeared on Food Network.

The Hive Bakery apparently hates Conservatives and our country. This was their message for the 4th of July:
“We refuse to observe this holiday. F*** this fascist regime”
Would be a shame if everyone in the area saw this! pic.twitter.com/1eqF0ttstf
Local reaction in the generally conservative Denton County area highlighted ongoing cultural and political divisions in North Texas communities.
