For many, the three-day Labor Day weekend begins Thursday afternoon, bringing an immediate surge in highway congestion. Transportation analytics company INRIX reports that the heaviest traffic will peak during the Thursday afternoon rush hour as holiday travelers merge onto freeways alongside daily commuters.
AAA projects that the vast majority of people traveling this weekend will do so by car.
According to AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster, Seattle has emerged as the top out-of-state destination for holiday travelers, largely driven by vacationers departing on Alaskan cruises.
