Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Lancaster

Lancaster police shot and killed a suspect they say may have been putting others in danger Monday morning. Police say the suspect was shot and killed at the Rosemont of Lancaster apartments about 6 a.m.

"Our kids come outside and play, and it's just becoming more and more unsafe over here," one tenant said as she watched police investigate after the shooting.

Another said he had already been making plans to move out.

"This is like the cherry on top. There have been shootings before," he said.

Police say the same suspect had led to a 911 call Sunday night. Lancaster Police Chief Sam Urbanski says they were called for a "welfare check" at 35E and Parkerville Road about 9:45 p.m.

Urbanski says a man was suspected of being under the influence and "was not allowing a female to leave the location of her own free will." Urbanski says the man was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

He says the suspect was released just before 6 a.m., and police were then dispatched to a shooting, saying the suspect had fired inside an apartment with a woman and two kids inside.

"This is the same individual from yesterday," Urbanksi says. "The adult male had fired several rounds inside the apartment. Officers made contact with the adult male, who had a gun. Officers engaged the male, which resulted in the male being fatally wounded."

Urbanski says no one else was hurt. Lancaster police are questioning the officers involved.

Monday afternoon, they had not released the names of the suspect or the officer who fired the fatal shot.
