With five drownings since July 4, a popular swimming beach at Lewisville Lake is closed until further notice.

The Lake Park swimming beach is busy every summer -- maybe more so this year because of our unrelenting heat wave.

A statement from Lewisville Parks and Recreation said in part, "the swim beach at Lewisville Lake Park has been closed to public access indefinitely due to safety concerns associated with several recent incidents that include two fatal drownings."

Those two were just last week -- a man and a teenage boy drowned. Over the Independence Day holiday, three men drowned. All five deaths were in separate incidents. All five were swimming without wearing a flotation device.

There are free loaner stations in Lewisville Lake Park and Tower Bay where visitors can use life jackets and then return them. While water levels were fine earlier this year, the heat, plus a persistent dry spell, has caused the water to recede -- exposing ground that is rockier than the usual sand beaches. That makes walking more slippery.

Plus, the lower water has exposed holes and drop-offs.
