Lewisville Police cracking down on alley speeders

Lewisville police have stepped up radar enforcement of the speed limits in alleys. They have also been catching offenders.

The city has been getting complaints in recent months, as drivers look to shave minutes off their commute by cutting through alleys to avoid road construction and school zones.

"Anytime you are talking about driving past driveways with a blind entrance or a blind exit there's always a safety issue and you keep in mind people put their trashcans back there for trash collection and little kids ride their bikes down the alley." said Matt Martucci, spokesman for the Lewisville Police Department.

The program has already met with success.  12 drivers were cited on the first day of the program, Feb. 3.  Another 11 were given warnings.

"Right now there are nine sections in the city of Lewisville that we have identified.  We are looking to expand that to get to as many as 12," said Martucci.

There is a statewide speed limit in alleys of 10 miles an hour unless there is a different speed limit that is posted.
