IRVING (1080 KRLD) - People staying at a hotel in Irving say lightning may have started a fire there this morning. The fire started just after 5 a.m. at the Super 8 near Highway 114 and Esters.
"It was scary, everybody beating on the door having us get out," one woman staying at the hotel said. "We had no warning at all."
The Irving Fire Department says firefighters and police went door-to-door to warn people to evacuate. The department says 17 of its units responded.
"It was just blazing," a man staying at the hotel next door said. "They eventually got it out, and it ended up lighting up, like, three more times."
He said his room faced the part of the Super 8 that was hit, and the sound and lights of emergency crews woke him up.
"There were cop cars over here in this parking lot, cop cars, fire trucks, ambulances in the streets, blocking off the streets," he said.
Irving Fire says crews contained the fire to the roof, and the fire was controlled about forty minutes after they arrived. No one was hurt, and the department says no rooms were damaged.
