The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has awarded Lockheed Martin a significant follow-on development contract for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System.
This contract, which spans up to 10 years if both extension options are exercised, aims to enhance THAAD’s capabilities over the next five years. With a potential ceiling value of $2.8 billion, this contract underscores the ongoing development needed to keep pace with increasingly complex missile threats.
Dan Nimblett, vice president at Lockheed Martin, expressed excitement about this opportunity, highlighting THAAD's effectiveness as a deterrent against various ballistic missile threats. He emphasized that this contract reinforces the partnership with the MDA to enhance defensive capabilities.
Building on the previous THAAD Advanced Capability Development contract from 2012, this new agreement will see the weapon system's capabilities further developed through specific task orders. THAAD has a perfect track record, with 17 successful intercepts in flight tests, making it a key component of missile defense against short, medium, and intermediate-range threats. It has also integrated successfully with the PAC-3 MSE interceptor.
Work will occur in multiple sites, primarily in Sunnyvale, California, and Dallas, Texas.
Lockheed Martin's THAAD Weapon System development is closely connected to Dallas, Texas, as a significant portion of the work under the new $2.8 billion contract will be carried out at their facilities in Dallas. This includes development, integration, and testing of hardware and software updates, as well as logistics support and training products for THAAD upgrades.
