Long-time Fort Worth city councilman and prominent attorney Jim Lane has died at the age of 78.

A native of Uvalde, Texas, Lane made Fort Worth his home for most of his adult life including his student days at TCU.

Lane came to national prominence as one of the lawyers defending American soldiers accused in the infamous My Lai massacre in Vietnam.

When his TCU pledge brother Ken Barr became Fort Worth mayor, he says Lane approached him with the idea of creating the Fort Worth herd of Longhorns that are still walked through the Stockyards twice a day.

From 1993 to 2005, Lane represented the north side on the Fort Worth City Council. Current Mayor Mattie Parker says "Jim Lane was a trailblazer in countless ways, always carrying a fierce love for Fort Worth. We all owe Jim a debt of gratitude for his decades of service to our city. Sending prayers to his wife Janet and son Jake along with the entire family."

As it happens, Lane was the lead attorney for Aaron Dean, the former Fort Worth police officer whose trial in the Atatiana Jefferson case was due to begin with jury selection today. The judge has not said whether the proceedings will be delayed.
