An elderly man was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday morning after being found unresponsive in a pond behind his home during frigid temperatures linked to a winter storm, authorities said.

First responders were initially called about 10:30 a.m. to help an elderly woman who had fallen in her backyard when they discovered her husband in the icy water, according to the Colleyville Police Department and fire crews.

Officials say the couple lives in the 5000 block of Fry Lane, and responders pulled the man from the pond before transporting him to a local hospital. At the time of the incident, temperatures were about 15°F with a “feels like” around 3°F. The man’s name and further medical details have not been released.

Police have not yet disclosed how the man came to be in the pond or how long he had been in the water before being found. The woman who initially called for help did not require transport, according to authorities.

Context
The severe cold across North Texas on Sunday was part of a winter storm that brought ice, snow and dangerously low wind chills to the region, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service and local officials about hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activities. Vehicles on untreated roads and slick surfaces increased the number of weather-related emergency calls throughout the day.
