SHERMAN (1080 KRLD)- An explosion and fire at a house in Sherman has left one man dead and a woman in the hospital. The fire started just after 8 p.m. Sunday at a house on Sistrunk Street.
"911 was activated, and Sherman Fire Department arrived to find the home had exploded and was on fire," says Grayson County Fire Marshal John Weda.
Weda says firefighters found a woman trapped inside.
"A wall had fallen on the victim, and they were trying to protect her from the fire," he says.
Weda says crews needed about an hour to rescue the woman. During that time, they were trying to keep the fire from spreading. Once she was freed, she was taken to a hospital in Plano by helicopter.
When crews were able to knock down more of the fire, they started searching other parts of the house and found a man dead. Weda says the couple lived there together, and they had talked with relatives on the phone about an hour earlier. During that call, he says the couple told family members they smelled propane.
"We don't expect any kind of foul play. At this time, it just appears to be a propane leak within the house. It got to the right concentration and ignited," he says.
The Grayson County Fire Marshal is working with the Texas Railroad Commission to confirm the cause.
Weda says the explosion also broke windows at a house across the street, but no one else was hurt.
