A Mansfield business owner is accused of filing phony tax returns, lots of them.
Court records show 40-year-old John Anthony Castro has been indicted on 33 counts. Prosecutors say he was the owner of Castro and Company, a virtual tax return preparation business with offices in Florida, Washington D.C. and Texas.
They say Castro started submitting false returns on behalf of his clients in 2016. He would offer them higher refunds if they agreed to split the amount with him.
Prosecutors say he did that with dozens of people and racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of improper refunds.
Each case carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison, so Castro faces a maximum of 99 years behind bars if he is convicted.
