Mansfield ISD keeping extra officers at schools

MANSFIELD (1080 KRLD)- Mansfield ISD says additional police officers have been working at each of its campuses today as a result of Wednesday's shooting at Timberview High School. Mansfield ISD always has officers working at each school.

"The way the events unfolded yesterday demonstrates how having a police officer on every campus makes a difference," says Mansfield ISD Superintendent Kimberley Cantu.

Cantu says a Mansfield ISD police officer "responded swiftly" to the first calls about a shooting Wednesday. She says students and teachers also reacted as they are taught. She says the response from police, teachers and students helped "quickly contain" the danger.

"We know you entrust your loved ones to our care, and the safety and security of our students and staff is always our top priority," she says.

Cantu also credits police from the Cities of Mansfield, Arlington and Grand Prairie with a quick response. She says the departments collaborated with Mansfield ISD police to ensure students and staff in other classrooms were safe before evacuating the school and reuniting kids with their parents at the district's Center for the Performing Arts.

"We pulled together to help each other, and we received an outpouring of help for our students, staff and first responders," she says. "Although the events of yesterday were horribly traumatic, they also demonstrated the things that make Mansfield ISD so incredible and strong."

Cantu says counseling services will be offered at Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts and Word of Truth church as long as is necessary.
