Mark Cuban has filed a petition in Dallas County court seeking detailed records on the Dallas Mavericks’ planned new arena at the former Valley View mall site in north Dallas. The filing, submitted this week, asks a judge to compel the team’s majority owners to disclose information about the arena purchase contract, financing, corporate structure, and related development opportunities.
Cuban, who sold majority control of the franchise in 2023 but retains a 27% ownership stake, alleges he was excluded from the arena planning process and other business opportunities tied to the project. The petition claims the majority owners, led by Patrick Dumont, engaged in “adversarial business practices” by shutting him out despite agreements related to the sale. It states Cuban’s businesses were “contractually entitled to participate” in the Valley View development.
The proposed arena would replace the team’s current home at American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas when the lease expires in 2031. The Mavericks signed an option agreement for roughly 104 acres at the Valley View site, with the project now moving forward under an entity controlled by the new ownership group. Cuban says he was not informed of key details until public filings appeared.
The dispute stems from the 2023 sale of majority ownership to the Adelson and Dumont families. Cuban has publicly expressed regret over the buyers and has accused the new ownership of reneging on informal agreements that would have kept him involved in basketball operations. The petition references a “handshake deal” and points to decisions such as the 2025 trade of Luka Dončić, which Cuban says he learned about only minutes before it was finalized.
The filing is a pre-suit petition under Texas Rule 202, a legal tool used to obtain information and testimony before potentially filing a full lawsuit. It warns that once the transaction closes, unwinding it could prove difficult. No full lawsuit has been filed yet.
A team spokesperson declined to comment on the petition. The Adelson and Dumont families have not publicly responded to the latest filing.
