The Mckinney National Airport is working to expand. But first, developers need the okay from the city council and from voters.

Big changes are coming to the McKinney National Airport. The city council just gave the green light for a development firm to help with an expansion project on the airport's west side.

The proposed airport expalsion includes the addition of a 40,000 square foot hangar and a new federal inspections station to house a US Customs staff.

Airport Director Ken Carley says these new facilities are desperately needed.

"We are probably saying 'no' to a corporate customer every week because we don't have the facilities to accommodate their needs" said Carley.

City officials are also hearing more about a proposed bond that would expand the airport for commercial services. That project would cost about $300 million, but the bond committee is only pushing for $200 million to be approved by voters.

The McKinney city council is expected to take action on the proposals next month.
