A new video from McKinney police may help potential victims avoid being cheated by scammers.

Police say a McKinney woman was contacted by phone from a scammer saying he was from the US Border Patrol and was working with McKinney police.

She was told a McKinney detective would soon contact her and, sure enough, the phone rang and the caller ID said "McKinney Police."

The so-called detective told her to take all of her money out of the bank, and that's when she knew it was a scam and called the police. The real police.

In a public service video, McKinney Police Sergeant Tina Malenfant says if a legitimate police or government agency ever does call you, they will never ask for money over the phone.
