Now that the summer heat is here, volunteers with Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County are making the rounds to ensure that none of their clients, especially senior citizens, are getting too hot.
Senior citizens are especially prone to suffer from heat related illnesses. Many of them often do not realize how hot their houses are, have broken ACs, or have their ACs turned off to conserve energy and save money.
If volunteers with Meals on Wheels arrive to discover someone with an exceedingly hot home due to a broken AC, they will replace it for free or give them a box fan. This is a service that helps a lot of people every summer, and if you want to donate to it, you can.
"We only take new items," says Keith Harrison, Vice President of Marketing for Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County. "And the reason for that is many times there are slight electrical problems. They've got frayed cords and things like that, and it becomes a liability issue."
If you don't have a brand new item to donate, Harrison says you can donate funds specifically to this program online by choosing "Client Assistance Program" when you give.
"We're so thankful for all of the support we get from the community," Harrison says. "Tarrant County is such a caring place to live."
