Denton County Public Health on Wednesday confirmed its first case of measles since 2019, in a person who visited Globe Life Field, several restaurants, a grocery store, and a church while contagious, officials say.

The infected individual, an adult with an unknown vaccination status, visited the locations from April 19-22, potentially exposing others to the virus.

Health officials released a list of locations the individual visited, including Globe Life Field in Arlington during a Texas Rangers game, and restaurants, a church, and retail stores in Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Richardson. Authorities urge anyone who visited these locations during the specified times to monitor for symptoms until May 13.

“Today’s case is further evidence that measles cases are on the rise – and the DFW area is no exception,” Dr. Matt Richardson, Denton County Director of Public Health said. “While we haven’t linked this case to an existing outbreak, it highlights two realities: vaccines are important, and if you have signs and symptoms, you should be tested.”

Measles is a respiratory virus that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that starts on the face and spreads downward. Complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling, and, in rare cases, death.

This case comes amid a statewide outbreak originating in West Texas, which has resulted in over 660 reported cases and two fatalities. Public health officials are working to contain the spread and are urging residents to review their vaccination records. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection and is recommended for children and adults who have not been vaccinated.

For more information and updates, residents are encouraged to visit the Denton County Public Health website or contact their healthcare provider.
