With another triple-digit day on tap Monday, Med-Star has some serious warnings about the dangers of this heat.
Over the weekend, Med-Star reports treating more than 30 patients with heat-related conditions. They brought 14 people to the hospital; four were in serious condition and one was critical.
In the six weeks since early May, Med-Star paramedics have had 166 heat-related patients. More than 100 went to the hospital, 25 in serious condition and four in critical.
Between May 1 and June 12, MedStar crews have seen a more than 306 percent increase in the number of heat related calls compared to last year.

"It is always surprising when you see almost triple the number of anything," said Matt Zavadsky, Chief Transformation Officer with MedStar. "But when you consider the impact that these heat related calls are having on residents in our community, you really begin to realize how big of an issue this is."
Zavadksy said of the 108 people taken to the hospital for heat related illnesses during this time frame, more than the 30 were in either serious or critical condition.
It's been so hot that MedStar has had to activate its extreme weather response protocol before noon the past couple of days, as well-- that's the earliest so far this year.
