COVID-19 isn't the only concern when it comes to sending kids back to campus.
Every year, MedStar crews are called to treat kids who get badly injured while heading to or from school.
"It's really important for parents to teach your kids how to safely cross the street," says Matt Zavadsky, with MedStar. "We do see one or two cases every year at the start of school where a kid in or around a school area, or at a bus stop, gets hit by a car."
Zavadsky says having important conversations about safety with your kids can help prevent these types of incidents. Another way to help? Nix the distracted driving.
"One of the worst things that can happen is if you're answering that phone, or you're talking to somebody in the car, or you're doing something else," Zavadsky says. "Just don't do it."
When you're behind the wheel, Zavadsky says you need to keep an eye out for buses and school zones— and be on on high alert near the start and end of the school day.
