The Mesquite school district is hiring more security guards for elementary schools to comply with a new state law.
The Mesquite ISD school board has voted unanimously to approve a bid to hire more security guards for schools. The district has approved a 2-year deal with L&P Global Security, the same company hired by Allen, McKinney and Wylie school districts.
Mesquite is hoping the new armed guard will be in place at all 34 elementary schools by the September 1st deadline.
The new guards will cost the district about $2 million, the state will kick in about $750,000 of that.
The armed guard requirment is a new state law aimed at improving school security.
When students in Mesquite returned to school last week a student at Horn High School was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to school on the first day back. It was discovered because of the districts new clear backpack policy.
