Midlothian, TX — May 6, 2025 - The Midlothian Fire Department is grieving the loss of Riggs, their beloved firehouse dog, after he was struck and killed by a vehicle along the highway.
Riggs, a three-year-old yellow Labrador mix, had been missing since Friday, May 2, prompting an extensive search effort by firefighters and the local community. The department even offered a $1,000 reward for his safe return, later increasing it to $2,500 as hope dwindled.
Sadly, on Tuesday morning, officials confirmed that Riggs had been hit by a vehicle and did not survive.
"While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support from our community," the department shared in a statement. "Riggs was more than just a station dog—he was part of our family."
Riggs had been a fixture at Fire Station #1, offering comfort to firefighters after stressful calls. Fire Chief Dale McCaskill described him as a source of emotional support, saying, "He was always excited when they returned from a call, greeting them at the door with the same enthusiasm every time."
The department has not yet announced plans for a memorial service, but tributes have poured in from across North Texas, with residents expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Riggs.
The Midlothian Fire Department thanked the community for their efforts in searching for Riggs, emphasizing that his presence will be deeply missed.
