The search for a missing 5-year-old boy ended in heartbreak Monday afternoon when his body was discovered submerged in a creek near his home. Santiago Aburto Gonzalez, who had been the subject of an Endangered Missing Person Alert, was found approximately four feet underwater in South Cottonwood Creek, close to the Ashton Park Apartment Homes on West Pioneer Parkway.

Santiago, described as having an intellectual disability, was last seen Sunday evening around 7 p.m. after walking out of his family's apartment. Authorities launched an extensive search effort, deploying drones, K-9 units, and divers to comb the area. The Grand Prairie Public Safety Dive Team located his body during a manual search, as the creek's zero visibility made the task especially challenging.

Police have stated that no foul play is suspected, though the investigation remains ongoing. The community has been left reeling from the tragedy, with many expressing condolences to Santiago's family. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the family during this unimaginably difficult time," said a spokesperson for the Grand Prairie Police Department.

The circumstances surrounding Santiago's disappearance and death are still under review, and authorities have not yet determined whether any charges will be filed. For now, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and ensuring a thorough investigation.
