More than 7.7 million Texans cast ballots during early voting for the Nov. 3 midterm election, topping the early-vote totals from recent midterms. In-person early voting ended Friday, and Election Day polls open tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Preliminary figures from the Texas Secretary of State’s office showed the strong turnout as counties finished reporting. The Texas Tribune reported that more than 7.7 million Texans had voted early by Sunday morning, putting the early-voting rate above 40% of registered voters and surpassing the 2018 midterm mark. More than 19 million Texans are registered to vote.

The high participation comes in a year with closely watched statewide races, including the U.S. Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, and the governor’s race between Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Local races and ballot measures are also on the ballot across the state.

In North Texas, counties saw increases compared with 2018. Dallas County reported more than 600,000 early votes in some tallies, while Tarrant, Collin, and Denton counties also recorded higher early participation than the last midterm, according to local and state data compiled by news outlets.

Voters who have not yet cast a ballot can vote on Election Day at their assigned polling place. Anyone in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote. Mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by the next day under state rules.

Officials continue to process final early-vote numbers as Election Day approaches. Voters can check registration status and polling locations at VoteTexas.gov.
