The capital murder trial of the convicted felon accused of shooting two hospital workers at Methodist Dallas is expected to continue today.

To hear police and prosecutors tell it, 31-year-old Nestor Hernandez was in a rage and dressed in black, when he marched into Dallas Methodist Hospital in October last year to confront his ex-girlfriend, who had just given birth to their baby boy.

In the hospital, Nestor confronted her about cheating on him, pulled out a gun, and opened fire killing Jacqueline Pokuaa, a social worker, and Annette Flowers, a nurse. A police officer returned fire, hitting Hernandez in the leg, and he surrendered.

As it turned out he had a long criminal record and was supposed to be wearing an ankle monitor, but he simply tore it off, police say.

That prompted a new state law, making it a felony to remove or disable an ankle monitor.

Dallas police chief Eddie Garcia shared his frustrations about the device during the announcement back in March, as reported by NBC 5.

"It is my belief that ankle monitors do not work,” he said. "We're giving too many chances to violent criminals and not giving enough chances to our victims and communities and neighborhoods that need it. So yes, this is extremely helpful and something that will definitely benefit us."

Testimony is set to resume today. He faces a life sentence.
