You may have seen the big tent going up at Grandscape in The Colony and wondered what that monstrosity was all about.

Well, you need a big tent to tell a big story.

The musical His Story debuts at Grandscape on May 5. The show tells the story of Jesus Christ in a modern broadway-style show. And would you believe that the creator is in her early 20s?

"It's been so exciting," says the musical’s creator Anna Miriam Brown, 22. "I honestly feel just mind-blown."

Brown says she was never a big musical theatre fan until hearing the music for Hamilton when she was 16. The music, rhythms and storytelling sparked her curiosity for American history, and also her passion for musical theatre.

"At that point I'd really been digging into the story of Jesus," Brown says. "I really wanted to create something similar to Hamilton with the story that I loved so much.

"So I just said a prayer, and really felt called to start writing songs. And I just kind of went for it. My little sister taught me some chords on the piano. About a year later I had about 30 songs written."

Her parents heard her work and encouraged her to make an album out of her songs. But still, she never really thought it would make the stage. The big break came when Tony Award nominated producer Bruce Lazarus, and director, Jeff Calhoun (Newsies) got involved.

"I am so honored to be working with Jeff," Brown says. "When we talked to Jeff on the phone and he explained his vision for the musical and his passion and heart for it, me and my sister Rachel just absolutely fell in love with him and what he saw this show becoming."

So cue more writing, visioning, re-writing, tears, more re-writing, casting, and countless other milestones to bring His Story to the stage. Now, it opens May 5.

"It just feels surreal," Brown says. "I cannot believe it's so soon. But every day just seeing the actors put their spin on the characters...everything is starting to take shape before my eyes.

"It's literally so much more beautiful than I could have imagined. I'm so excited for opening night."

His Story is playing at the Broadway Tent at Grandscape (5752 Grandscape Blvd, The Colony), a state-of-the-art 1300-seat theater tent featuring plush seating, 360 degree overhead projection mapping, and full A/C and heating.
